C. 1890. This is an unusual basket it that it is dyed red, probably with natural dyes. It is 3.5 inches wide, 3.75 inches long, and 2.75 inches tall. The rim finish is a false braid, more commonly seen in Ute and Navajo basketry. Willow; coil construction; natural dye. Collection information indicates that this basket came from the Frederic Douglas collection and is attributed to the Shoshones of Idaho. Douglas was an early curator for the Denver Art Museum. Despite the attribution, this basket may very well be Ute in origin and demonstrates the possibilities of intertribal trade. Cat. No. 1952.617. Courtesy Denver Art Museum.
