C.1870 Shoshone Moccasins. Sinew-sewn beadwork with older,
pre-reservation style side-seam construction (upper & soles are single piece of
buckskin). According to collection notes, the design represents a woman's
saddle.
The use of split tongues is unusual for Shoshone moccasins, as is the
slanting cobalt blue beads that edge the sole seam. Collected by Emile Granier on the Wind
River Indian Reservation and accessioned in 1898.
