1915-1925. Fort Hall Shoshone purse. Braintanned-tanned buckskin,
seed beads, faceted beads, cotton thread. Beaded on one side only.
Many of the beads used in this wonderful early rose design date to the late 19th
century. The use of clear faceted beads are most frequently seen on
beadwork from the Iroquois during the early 20th century. There is a note
on the back that states: "in remembrance of Pocatello," which suggests
that perhaps this was a souvenir purchased on a western trip, or by a soldier,
since Pocatello was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad in the early 20th
century. 5.5" long, 4.75" wide (not including handle or fringe
beading). Personal collection of the author. |
