C. 1910-1920.  Shoshone beaded gauntlets.  Buckskin, cotton thread, seed beads, metallic beads, cotton print lining.  A note in the box suggests that these gauntlets and the other items were gifts of Chief Washakie to various Indian agents.  Not possible in this instance, as these gauntlets were constructed about 20 years after Washakie's death.  Note that these gauntlets demonstrate a transition from early geometric & floral designs of the 19th century to more realistic florals of the 20th century.  They also are somewhat similar to Blackfeet beadwork, which often uses a three-flower design.  Click here or on the image for detailed view.  Size is 14" long.  Cat. No. Box 813, Benjamin Sheldon, Alice Sheldon, and Howard "Tubby" Houston Col.  Courtesy American Heritage Center, Laramie, WY.
