C.1870-1884. This
beaded dress is one of the few Shoshone items in any collection with good
provenance. It belonged to Chief Washakie's daughter--Nahtoma
(Elizabeth)--and was given in June 1884 to John Bothwell, who was the president
of the Halifax & Long Island RR. Bothwell was travelling through
Wyoming on a Union Pacific RR pass and evidently received or bought this dress
in Rawlings. It measures 48" long and is 43" wide across the
bottom. Buckskin, beads, sinew-sewn. Note the use of
"boxed eye" design and predominate blue field. From the William R. McIver collection. Cat. No.
7516, Artifact Box 109. Courtesy American Heritage Center, University of
Wyoming.
