C.1900-1920. Painting on elk hide, attributed
to George Washakie, son of Chief Washakie. Provenance says the hide
depicts buffalo hunt scene & Wolf Dance (but see close-up for more accurate
assessment). This is an extremely vibrant painted hide and most
likely was stored soon after its original collection. Click
here or on the picture to see a detailed view of
the dance. Collected by William Wildschut c.1925 and accessioned same
year. Cat. No. 12.2147. Courtesy NMAI, Cultural Resources Center,
Suitland, MD.
