Beaded Bag 3
12. Beaded bag
This
heavily beaded bag with fringe and brass tacks was described by
Royal Balcolm as a beaded comb bag with braided fringe, possibly
the finest piece of bead work in the collection, made by a Mrs.
Crispin whose work won the prize at the [1893] Columbian Exposition
[in Chicago].
The bag, which appears to be made of rawhide leather, is heavily
beaded on the front side only and on the front part of the flap
that folds over to close the bag. The beadwork consists mostly of
small white glass seed beads backing a series of three
geometric shapes made from pink, green, blue, red, and brown seed
beads. The length of the bag is 17 inches. It is 8 5/8 inches in
width at the base and 7 1/8 inches in width at the top. The flap
extends down 2 3/8 inches. WHC2000.17.21.
