11. John Roberts talking with Shoshone man, Date Unknown (BIA, Wind River Agency

He was strict but he made you want to learn. (Pansey St. Clair)

JohnRobertstalkingwithShoshonemanRev. Roberts who learned Shoshone from the old people, was a central figure on the reservation in many ways. With a fairly constant stream of visitors, the mission served as something of a community center as well as a school. Dolly Rowan remembers Roberts inviting the girls into his home on special occasions.

It was so homey and nice....Our teacher, Gwennie, would get kind of rough if we wouldn’t mind, but he was nice. He was the most wonderful person that I’ve ever met. And we all went to church and lived happily ever after, I guess. I enjoyed it...it was wonderful when I look back on it. It was a second home to me.
